Why Study The Chinese Language?

Chinese, or Mandarin to be specific, is the official dialect of the People’s Republic of China.  Mandarin is spoken by the largest population of people on the planet. China has and continues to play a major role in the world both politically and economically.  China has a rich and beautiful culture that comes alive as the language is learned. Who is ENFL?

ENFL logo

ENFL was founded by an American and Chinese language teacher to bring the benefits of both Western and Eastern education system together in order to teach the Chinese language in a way that is effective and fun for students from all types of backgrounds. Through the system developed at ENFL it is hoped that the myth that “Chinese is a difficult language to learn” will be a thought of the past. Our teaching system systematically breaks down the Great Wall of learning Chinese into its simplest parts, and then we break that down even further. In the end, our students are left with the essence of the language and come away with a positive experience in learning Chinese.

What Chinese classes are offered at ENFL?

Our experienced teaching staff is specially trained to administer our classes; which are designed so that our students will quickly and effectively be able to communicate, in the “Real World” using the Chinese language. This is done by our courses using real life situations to teach Chinese. Our students are amazed that after only one week they are able to go to the store and are able to buy ice-cream or ask directions to go to a market. Our classes are not limited to just speaking. Yes, we know that this is the foundation of a language, to communicate vocally, but we have a system that is used to teach Chinese Characters that our students have commented on as being nothing but amazing. Our goal is that when our students leave our school, they will not only be able to speak Chinese fluently, but also can understand Chinese characters and Chinese culture. Why do we want our students to also have an understanding of Chinese culture? One of our students once said, “Why learn a language if all you are going to do is offend the people you are trying to talk to?” We teach Chinese culture in many ways. One is by going over many scenarios such as a dinner or a business meeting, another is through Chinese culture classes, such as in Martial Arts, Brush painting, Calligraphy, traditional Chinese instruments, and many more. We also have many activities with local Chinese. We often host language exchanges where our students can practice speaking Chinese with native speakers and make Chinese friends. Let us help you make your time in China a wonderful experience!

How are Class Levels divided?

Our goal is for our students to either learn or improve their current level of the Chinese language within the shortest amount of time possible, while also having the opportunity to learn about the Chinese Culture and the country of China. We do this in a way that no other school in Beijing does. Where many schools in Beijing separate students into classes where Chinese reading, writing, speaking, and listening are taught at the same level, we separate our students into levels based on every aspect of the language. If a student has a very high Chinese speaking level, but a very low Chinese writing level, than that student is put into a high Chinese speaking class and a low Chinese writing class. This is unlike many schools in Beijing that would put that same student in an intermediate Chinese class where the writing would be too advanced and the speaking would be too easy. This idea is simple; make sure every moment in every class fits that student’s level. In the example above that student’s time is completely wasted. In other situations that student may be placed in an advanced speaking class, at which only 50% of that student’s time and money are put to good use. We want that student to always feel that 100% of their time and money is used to the fullest!

How can we offer University Credit?

Forestry University and ENFL Logo

In April of 2010, ENFL and the Forestry University (a famous University known for its environmental work both nationally and internationally) signed an agreement. The agreement allowed for the opening of a Language Training Center as a new department of the Forestry University. As a result, ENFL classes are held on the Forestry University campus, our students have the option of staying in Forestry University dorms, and at the completion of our classes we are able to offer an official Forestry University Certificate stating the hours and classes that were completed. This official certificate can be used at colleges throughout the world to receive credit.
